Quebec is teeming with talented freelancers who are shaping the professional landscape with their creativity and boldness. Each month, we spotlight the journey of a local freelancer, their daily life and their unique vision of the profession. Let us meet Valérie Trudel, the skilled illustrator behind Petit Strudel.

1. Tell us about yourself

My name is Valérie Trudel, also known as Petit Strudel, and I am a graphic designer, illustrator, and instructor of creative workshops.

2. Where does your interest in illustration and design come from?

As far as I can remember, I have always been passionate about everything related to the arts; when I was younger, I could spend hours drawing, without ever growing weary. Fabulous, coloured posters always accompanied my oral presentations, and my model creations were carefully analyzed and considered. Therefore, I can say that my interest in the arts has always been a part of me!

3. How did you become self-employed?

The need for freedom has always been a part of me, but it finally got the better of me in 2024. After 10 years as a graphic designer, both in business and at an agency, I wanted to create a work environment where my passions could serve my clients—and where I could manage my time as I wished.

I wanted to build caring relationships with people who also make interesting and constructive projects. And until now, things are going pretty well!

4. What is the most challenging part of self-employment?

After a full year as an entrepreneur, I would say that loneliness has been quite a challenge for me. I work from home alone, and it can sometimes be difficult not to have the opportunity to share our daily lives with colleagues, to celebrate our successes, or to support each other during busier times.

5. Which part of being self-employed do you like the most?

Freedom, of course, but also the links I create with my clients. When I see the concrete results of our collaborations, it makes me feel happy!

6. Tell us about your work routine.

First, we need to know that I am not an early bird; therefore, my work routine starts near 10 am. Even if I use a project management tool, I often start my day by listing the tasks I need to accomplish during the day or week. It helps me be more productive and efficient!

Next, my days vary from one to another, and I like it this way; I am not a big fan of routines (which is why I became a freelancer!). I often follow my inspiration, and I rotate the projects according to whether my brain is feeling more creative or analytic. I try to end my days at 6 pm, but if I have an outstanding idea or inspiration in the evening, it is possible that I return to my desk.

7. What are the online tools you could not live without?

Of course, the Adobe suite helps me create everything. Pinterest, Awwwards and Behance to inspire me. ActiveCollab for project management and Momenteo for my accounting!

8. How did you learn about Momenteo, and how long have you been using it?

I have been using Momenteo since the first day of my entrepreneurial journey. I saw many people on Facebook groups recommending it, and that is how I learned about it.

9. What makes Momenteo different from other accounting tools?

Momenteo is simple to use and very friendly. The fact that it is made here in Quebec is a positive aspect because it makes it easy to contact customer service. We feel that our suggestions are really taken into account by the team. Perfect for the needs of a freelancer!

10. How did you find your first customers?

During my last years as an employee, I began creating numerous illustrations and exhibits, which put me in contact with cities and organizations in my area. When I became self-employed, word of mouth proved to be an effective method, and I found my clientele through this approach.

11. What are your tips for someone who would like to get into freelancing?

Do not neglect your network: participate in events for entrepreneurs, city-organized activities, and networking events. In my opinion, meeting people in person remains the most effective way to create genuine and lasting connections with potential clients.

Also, prepare the base of your business before taking the leap (management and accounting tools, materials). It made the switch much easier!

12. Why would someone need to work with an illustrator?

For many reasons! However, for many, it is to stand out with unique illustrations that are thought-provoking and truly resonate with the target audience, while valorizing the work of local artists. An ad, flyer, or exposition; be different, participate in cultural vitality and encourage local businesses at the same time!

13. Why are you proud of being a freelancer?

To make a difference in my community by being involved in the projects of local businesses and entrepreneurs, and by celebrating their successes with them. If my ideas can elevate their projects to the next level, it will be a mission accomplished!

14. Do you have any big plans for the second half of 2025?

Yes, always! A ludic course project for Christmas, which will take place once again this year, colourful ad campaigns, some unique brand images, and a special project that remains secret. To be followed!
